Day 20 - We met the $4.00 mark

We pulled out of Pendleton about 9:00 a.m. headed for the Portland area. Stopped for fuel and it was $4.17 per gallon. WOW! On top of that, you cannot pump your own gas in Oregon. We'd run across that before in New Jersey. Cut the cost and I'll pump it myself! I can do it.

The eastern side of Oregon doesn't look at all like what I thought Oregon looked like. It's dry and hilly and desert like. It's windy, too. We've seen "wind farms" everyone on top of ridges. We also saw a huge warning sign: "WARNING! Blowing dust area for the next 40 miles." The wind buffeted the RV, but most of the wind was a head wind until we reached the Columbia River Gorge. Then it became a swirling cross wind.

You see the picture of Chrissy with her ears sticking straight out? It's the wind! She reminded us of the old show "The Flying Nun." Bet she could fly across the river and back! The wind is blowing whitecaps and waves on a river going the other direction. Still there are people out on the river fishing! Some in small boats....not me!

David likes Pilot Truck Stops as it's easy to get in and out with the RV and he likes their coffee. We saw the ultimate Pilot....it has an RV park. I'm afraid he'll really want to spend the night! LOL

We can see Mt. Hood from the road, but it's a long way from us yet. We saw a sign that says the elevation of Mt. Hood is 11,240'. Thank goodness we don't cross it.

We drove along the Columbia River Gorge and it's beautiful, but windy. One of the towns along the gorge is The Dalles. We learned it marked the end of the Oregon Trail for those headed west. We also saw several teams playing ice hockey alongside the road. Almost summer and still playing ice hockey!

We stopped at a rest area along the river and found squirrels! They were everywhere! David had some pretzels, so he gave them some of them. MORE squirrels appeared!

As we were leaving the welcome center near town, we passed an overpass. The overpass was decorated with salmon leaping into the air. We passed one small river where salmon were jumping like that!

We reached the campground in Fairview (outside Portland) and it's very nice. Roses everywhere and so neat and clean. They even have a duckpond where you can feed ducks. They even provide the food for you to feed them. We've seen rabbits everywhere in the park. Some of them are just babies!

Early dinner and off tomorrow to tour the Columbia River Gorge and Waterfall Areas.

See ya down the road!

Jenny :)
