Day 41 - I promise I'll be good! It's too hot to play outside!

We decided to skip Barstow, CA and go on to Las Vegas even though it means we're a day ahead of schedule. Of course, we're going through mountains and a desert and it's very hot!

Not much to see along the road:

Breakfast at McDonald's
The 10 Commandments on signs along the road
A town spelled Zzyzx in California
World's Tallest Thermometer - Baker, CA - 104 degrees
World's Tallest Convenience Store
Air Conditioning off for the next 16 miles (BIG HILL!)
Joshua trees outside Joshua Tree National Park
Bypassing Death Valley - already there I think!
Enter Las Vegas at 12:30 p.m.

We came through Las Vegas on the back side of the strip headed toward Nellis Air Force Base and the Las Vegas Motor Speedway (already been there). We get to the campground and it's a fortress! If you stay more than a day you have to buy a gate remote to get in and out. Fortunately, we're here one day.

We have trouble getting into the spot assigned to us, so David walks back to the office to tell them we need a different site. He's gone forever and then I see him walking back and forth. He could find a way to get back to the office as he can't get the gate to open. It has to be opened by the office when they see you on camera. Apparently they weren't looking. He finally got in the gate when someone else came in.

We finally get set up, but it's a 50 amp site and we need 30 amp service or an adapter. Back to the office. Keep in mind it's 110 degrees now. He finally comes back and tells me that a 30 amp service is "hidden" on the spot. Great!

We go inside the RV and it's 116 degrees and now the AC doesn't want to work! We started looking for a motel that would take pets because it was too dangerous to stay in that heat! David got the AC to work by removing the cover of the breaker box and pointing a fan on it. We could get the temp to come down a couple of degrees at a time. Took quite some time to get it to 89 degrees.

We go to bed with the fan running and the AC struggling. I woke up sometime during the night and realized the fan had stopped running. Then I realized the AC wasn't running! I woke David up and he looked outside. It was quiet...no generators running, no AC's running anywhere. It was a power outage. We managed to get back to sleep and sometime during the night the power came back on. The fridge stayed cold because it switched over to gas when the power went out.

Think we'll leave early tomorrow!

See ya down the road!

Jenny :)
