Day 36 - Glacier Point and Marisposa Grove

We decided to leave early to make today's drive as it's some distance from the campground. We're about an hour away from Yosemite and the drive takes us up in the mountains above Yosemite.

On our way into the park, we passed two gas stations with prices over $5.00 a gallon. The diesel fuel at these stations is close to $6.00 a gallon. We didn't get fuel there!

Our first stop was Glacier Point. It was beautiful! We could see full waterfalls and Half Dome was so close you could almost reach out and touch it. People were telling us there were people on top of Half Dome. Sure enough..there were people up there! We first thought they were trees, but they were moving. WOW!

We walked over to another viewpoint and geological exhibit housed in a small stone building. I sat outside on a bench with Chrissy while David explored the building. A couple came up with their 90 year old father. The daughter told me that her father had had 3 dachshunds and he missed them. Knowing Chrissy's temperament, I asked him would he like to pet her. She sniffed his hand, licked him and was all over him. She somehow understood he needed to pet her. She didn't growl or try to move away. A little girl saw Chrissy and she let her pet her, also. This was one of the few trails in the parks where dogs were welcome and Chrissy was welcomed in many languages!

We got back in the truck and headed down to the next viewpoint. We decided to have lunch here and the view was spectacular!

We moved on to Mariposa Grove. This is still in the park and is made up of giant Sequoia trees. It's hard to even take pictures of them as you can't get a whole tree in the picture. Dogs are not permitted to enter the grove as they may bring in parasites that are not in the grove now. David and I took turns walking the trail among the trees. They are HUGE!

We were about 4 hours away from the campground at this point, so we asked Sir Garmin for another route back to the campground. He gave us one that was not that far but was about 2 hours instead of 4. We decided to go that way.

Since we needed fuel and some groceries, we stopped along the way in Oakhurst. David was going to get a few groceries and put them in the cooler in the truck. We didn't get the eggs which were $4.99 a dozen and we didn't get a rotisserie chicken which was $9.99. We did get some water, though! LOL

As we were leaving, we noticed a huge cloud coming over the mountains. We'd seen it as a small one earlier, but now it was much larger. After Oakhurst we were on the way to Mariposa. We started noticing fire engines, graders, fireman, and other equipment headed back toward Oakhurst. We still don't know if the cloud was saw was really a cloud or smoke from a fire.

Remember the road we didn't like the other day? Well....Sir Garmin had us going back up that road! Priest Grade! It wasn't quite as bad as the other day as the RV wasn't behind us, but still had a couple of times I came close to screaming. Decided to look at the route for tomorrow...yes, we have to go back down the hill...WITH THE RV! Yikes!

We were all tired, so we made it an early evening. A little reading and lights out!

Tomorrow....Big Sur and Carmel! Back to the coast!

See ya down the road!

Jenny :)
