Day 21 - Snowy picnic in June

Pictures: The long, single waterfall is "Horsetail Falls." The fall with the bridge in the middle is "Multnomah Falls." The snowy mountain view is Mt. Hood taken from the Timberline Ski Resort. The full view of Mt. Hood was taken from an apple orchard.

I got to sleep late this morning....7:00 a.m. Not really late until you realize it's 9:00 a.m. at home! Breakfast and we head out.

We're going to drive the Columbia River Gorge and the Mt. Hood Scenic Highway. We started with the Mt. Hood drive. It's drizzly and cool and cloudy. Not a good way to see a mountain.

We decided to visit Timberline Ski Lodge on Mt. Hood. There is still about 12' of snow here. People were skiing and snowboarding. Even when the clouds rolled through and blocked the peaks, they were still skiing.

We made our way down the mountain and decided to have lunch. We saw a sign for a parking and picnicking area. We pulled in...no tables as they are apparently under the snow! One other couple was also having lunch in the parking lot. We made our sandwiches and enjoyed the view and watch a light snow fall. June 1st and it's still snowing! WOW!

We finished our lunch and decided to head out. We pulled over by the car of the other couple and David asked where they were from....Alabama! They are from Scottsboro and they are Joe and Rusty Williams. They had flown out and had not gotten any good shots of the mountain. I'll be emailing some of the ones I got when the mountain was out. Nice to meet some fellow residents of Alabama.

We finished the Mt. Hood Scenic Route and turned onto the Columbia River Gorge Drive. We'd seen part of it the day before as it runs along the interstate. We decided to pull off at the falls area. The falls are really beautiful this time of year. I got some nice photos of Horsetail Falls and Multnomah Falls. We road on part of the original road and was it ever narrow. Very glad we weren't pulling the RV through there.

It was a beautiful day, but still cloudy. Since David cooked some extra chicken when he grilled out, dinner was quick and easy - basmati rice with chicken broth, almondine green beans, and grilled chicken. YUM!

Watched some tv and headed to bed. More sight-seeing tomorrow.

See ya down the road!

Jenny :)
