Day 30 - Crater Lake, OR

It's cloudy and still snowing a bit. I'm cold...what's new? LOL LOL LOL

We leave early headed to Crater Lake. We've been told it's beautiful when the sun is out, but just another lake when it's cloudy. Guess we'll see!

The trip is about 50 miles to Crater Lake and over a mile high. We pass snow and more snow. We miss the visitor's center hidden in the snow! David decides we need to get some fuel and the park paper shows the gas station is just around the corner. Sure enough...two pumps in the middle of a parking lot. But surely something is wrong...$3.56 for a gallon? David wasn't sure the pumps were working because of the price, but he put his credit card in and the pump came on! It really was that price. What a surprise!

We start up to the mountain top and it's still snowing. We enter the gift shop/restaurant and go to the viewing window. The lake is clouded over! All of a sudden people were all at the window and saying "Get Ready!" The cloud blew away from the lake and there it was in all it's glory! It was astounding!

We headed back to the truck and stopped at the top viewing area. The ranger shouted "Get Ready!" Suddenly the clouds parted and there was the lake not through a window. It was cold and windy, but so worth standing in the cold and wet!

We shot several pictures and decided to have lunch. We'd packed a picnic and drove out to the one mile of the rim drive that was open. Rest closed for snow! We ate lunch watching the lake come and go from the clouds. It was so beautiful! Look closely in one of the photos for the blue jay! While I was taking photos, a bird landed in a tree next to me and "fussed" at me the whole time!

We took our time driving back and enjoyed the scenery. Tomorrow is a slow day and we should catch back up on our schedule!

See ya down the road!

Jenny :)
